Joel McHale On Parenting, Humor, And Supporting His Son’s Unique Path

Actor Joel McHale has always been known for his quick wit and comedic charm, but there’s something even more admirable about him: his approach to parenting. The star of Community recently opened up about his role as a supportive dad to his two sons, sharing how he navigates their unique personalities and aspirations. Joel revealed that his eldest son, Eddie, decided against the traditional college route, choosing instead to follow his passions.

“College Isn’t for Everyone”—Joel’s Take on Supporting His Son’s Choices

During an appearance on Today, host Hoda Kotb asked Joel about his thoughts on Eddie’s decision to skip college. “You mentioned in an interview that your son decided college wasn’t the right fit for him,” Hoda inquired. Joel responded with the same warmth and humor that fans love. “Oh yeah, my older son Eddie. He’s into video games and LEGOs, you know, the kind of kid who might say, ‘I might go to college, I’ll let you know.’ So I told him, ‘If you want to work for a video game company, go for it! Do your thing!’”

Why Listening to Your Kids Matters

Joel went on to explain that it’s crucial for parents to truly listen to their children’s desires rather than forcing them into paths they may not want. “There’s so much pressure these days to follow certain expectations, but you’ve got to hear what your kid really wants,” he said. “Then, ironically, force them to do the opposite. It’s all about finding balance, isn’t it?” His lighthearted yet insightful advice resonates deeply with many parents who struggle with similar decisions.

Meet Eddie and Isaac: Two Unique Sons

Joel is also the proud father of his younger son, Isaac, whom he shares with his wife, Sarah Williams McHale. He’s been open about Eddie’s journey, including the fact that the 19-year-old is on the autism spectrum. During a podcast episode of “Getting Grilled with Curtis Stone,” Joel shared a heartfelt story about Eddie’s personality. “Our eldest, Eddie—he’s 18 now and he’s on the autism spectrum. He’ll tell you that himself. And guess what? If you meet him, he’ll probably walk up to you and say, ‘Tell me about a time you got hurt.’ And then he’ll wait patiently for your answer.”

Eddie’s Future: Following His Passion for Video Games

Joel reiterated Eddie’s decision not to pursue higher education during the same podcast conversation. “We’re still figuring out his path, but one thing’s for sure—he loves video games, and he’s really good at them,” Joel explained. “So I said, ‘Why wait for college? Just dive in. Learn that C++ language and start creating video games. That’s incredible!’” The actor’s unwavering support shows how important it is to celebrate individuality and encourage kids to chase their dreams.

Joel’s Legacy of Laughter

One thing Joel is clearly passing down to his sons is his sense of humor. “They’re both incredibly sarcastic and love making fun of me,” he laughed. “At dinner, Eddie will say, ‘God is great, and Joel is not.’ Isaac, on the other hand, will chime in with, ‘Hey Dad, when are you going to be relevant again? Do you think people will like you someday?’” Joel’s ability to laugh at himself and embrace his family’s playful dynamic is a testament to his parenting style. It’s clear that while he takes his role as a dad seriously, he never takes himself too seriously.
