Usually, the charismatic Carson Daly is the one leading the charge, breaking down the latest pop culture headlines. But on Monday, July 8, guess what? He wasn’t there. Instead, the lovely Sheinelle Jones stepped up to the plate, filling in for Carson. Sheinelle didn’t give us much detail, just letting the audience know that Carson was taking some time off.

Savannah Guthrie couldn’t help but comment on Craig’s absence, saying, “Somebody is living his dreams. With the Olympics set to kick off on July 26, the Today team is getting ready to head to Paris to cover all the action. Last weekend, Hoda Kotb was out in Minnesota, cheering on the athletes vying for a spot on the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team. After the event, Hoda sat down with Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, all of whom made the team.

Suni Lee, who’s been battling health issues, opened up about the journey. She told Hoda, “There were so many times where I thought about quitting and just giving up because I was so sick and it was just so hard to stay motivated. But once I had those people around me who lifted me up and supported me, I knew that this is something that I wanted.”

Simone Biles, making it to her third Olympics, had a lot of emotions to share. She said, “Because of the depth that the U.S. has, it’s so incredible, so we’re all fighting for basically the same position. But that’s what makes Team USA Team USA. We have grit, we have power, we have grace. We kind of have everything.” She also mentioned, “I feel like a little bit of a redemption tour. In Tokyo, we all didn’t have our best performances, so we’re excited to go out there and kill it.”
