Johnny Whitaker: From Child Star To Inspirational Counselor

Hey there! If you were glued to the TV back in the '70s, you probably remember Johnny Whitaker like an old pal. Besides charming primetime audiences as the adorable Jody on Family Affair, Johnny also brought joy to Saturday mornings with Sigmund and the Sea Monsters and starred in the 1973 musical Tom Sawyer. Recently, Johnny, now 64, opened up exclusively to Closer about his journey. The best part of being a child actor, he says, was meeting President Johnson. But, on the flip side, he couldn’t play baseball or attend a regular school like other kids.

Like many former child stars, Johnny faced a tough transition into adulthood. As he puts it, "Christopher Knight from The Brady Bunch often says that Hollywood loves its puppies, but once they grow up, they’re not interested anymore. Unfortunately, that’s the harsh truth." Today, Johnny is a certified drug counselor and has been sober for an impressive 26 years. He's also working on his first memoir, sharing the highs and lows of his extraordinary life.

What Was Your Big Break, Johnny?

Johnny recalls, "Probably The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming in 1966 was my big break. That’s where I met Brian Keith. He wanted me to audition for the role of the next-door neighbor in his new series. Family Affair was originally designed for a 16-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy, and a six-year-old girl. But during my audition, Anissa Jones and I looked so much like twins that they changed the concept. That moment changed everything for me."

What’s Your Favorite Episode of ‘Family Affair’?

Johnny beams when talking about his favorite episode, "Arthur, the Invisible Bear." He explains, "In this episode, Uncle Bill goes to talk to my school counselor because I supposedly see an invisible bear. He goes in to see the therapist and tells me to wait outside. The script said, ‘Jody begins telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’ No one called cut, so I continued telling the entire story of the three bears. At the end, I got a standing ovation from the cast and crew. It was a magical moment."

Did You Get a Good Education During Your Years as a Child Star?

"Even though I was working, I had some of the best education experiences," Johnny shares. "Jodie Foster and I learned French during the summer of '71 when we worked on Napoleon and Samantha. She was going into Le Lycée Français in Los Angeles and needed to be semi-fluent in French to get into the school." After that, Johnny fell in love with languages, becoming proficient in several, including Portuguese, Spanish, and French. He also learned sign language in high school.

"Learning languages opened up a whole new world for me," he adds. "It allowed me to connect with people in ways I never imagined."
