Robert De Niro’s Honest Take On Fatherhood And Aging: What He Wants On His Tombstone

Robert De Niro Opens Up About His Life and Legacy

There’s no denying that Robert De Niro has always been known for his authenticity and willingness to speak his mind. But when the legendary actor recently shared what he wants written on his tombstone, it left people both surprised and deeply moved. De Niro, who’s been a father to seven children from four different women, continues to reflect on his journey as a parent and how he’s embraced life as he ages.

In a candid conversation on the latest episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the star of About My Father revealed some heartfelt thoughts about his life, family, and legacy. At 81 years old, De Niro is still going strong, and his reflections offer a glimpse into the mind of one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures.

De Niro’s Legacy: What He Wants on His Tombstone

When asked what he’d like inscribed on his gravestone, De Niro replied with characteristic sincerity, “I tried my best.” It’s a message that resonates deeply, especially given the challenges of parenting and life in general. “I was thinking about that the other day,” he told host and CNN anchor Chris Wallace, who responded with a surprised, “Really?”

But De Niro didn’t stop there. With a touch of humor, he added, “Please forgive me for everything that I’ve done,” as something else he’d like on his tombstone. It’s this blend of honesty and levity that makes De Niro such a relatable and beloved figure.

A Look at His Family Life

De Niro’s family is a tapestry of relationships spanning decades. His two eldest children, daughter Drena and son Raphael, are with ex-wife Diahnne Abbott. He shares twin sons Julian and Aaron with ex Toukie Smith, while son Elliot and daughter Helen are with ex-wife Grace Hightower. His youngest child, Gia, was born in April 2023 to girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

When asked if he considers himself a good father, De Niro was refreshingly candid. “No! I tried my best. That’s all I can say,” he admitted. “I was busy, of course, but I always loved my kids.” It’s a sentiment many parents can relate to—acknowledging imperfections while still pouring love into raising a family.

Embracing Aging: De Niro’s Perspective

As De Niro reflects on his 81 years, he acknowledges the inevitability of change. “I’m older, you know, I’m 81. Things just change,” he said during the interview. But rather than dwelling on the negative aspects of aging, De Niro embraces it wholeheartedly. “Embrace it. Embrace whatever you’ve been given,” he advised, offering words of wisdom for anyone navigating the passage of time.

Being a Dad Again at 79: Pure Joy

Becoming a father again at 79 brought a renewed sense of joy and purpose to De Niro’s life. His youngest child, Gia, turned one in April 2024, and the celebration was nothing short of delightful. “She had a little cake, it was very nice, sweet,” he shared with Entertainment Tonight. “Well, she’s pure joy, there’s nothing about her, there’s no judgment, there’s no anything, she just is what she is and it’s just pure joy for god sakes.”

Staying active and engaged in life isn’t just about physical health for De Niro—it’s about cherishing moments with his family. “I mean, I try to keep active in everything and yeah, what else am I gonna do?” he quipped when asked about his summer routine.

The Family That Grows Together

De Niro’s extended family is a testament to his ability to bring people together. “The kids all get a big kick out of her,” he told People magazine in February, referring to how his older children and grandkids are bonding with Gia. “The grandkids even. She’s their aunt — [and] they’re about to be teenagers!”

For De Niro, gathering his blended family is everything. “The fact that they’d all be together is everything to me,” he expressed, highlighting the importance of connection and unity in his life.

Gia’s presence continues to light up De Niro’s world. “She’s such an adorable baby. So sweet,” he gushed. “When I look at her, everything else goes away. So it’s a great joy and relief to just be with her in the moment.”
