Julie Bowen Talks Aging, Heroes, And Happy Gilmore 2 Spoilers

Julie Bowen’s career has been on fire ever since she stepped into the iconic role of Claire Dunphy in Modern Family back in 2009. And if you thought her momentum would slow down, think again. The actress is thrilled to see her fellow actresses landing incredible roles well into their later years. It’s a testament to the changing landscape of Hollywood, and Julie couldn’t be happier about it.

Jodie Foster is one of the names that immediately comes to mind for Julie. “Jodie Foster crossed over. She’s my freaking hero,” said the 54-year-old actress in a recent interview with People, published on November 8. “And Annette Bening—she’s another powerhouse. But honestly, so many of my peers still look 30! It’s crazy how well they’ve aged,” she added, marveling at the industry’s advancements in makeup, skincare, and technology.

Julie recounted a story about losing a role to someone who looked unnaturally youthful. “I remember once I lost a role to one of those very worked-over people, and they told me, ‘We want someone older than you.’ I was like, ‘But she looks like she’s 22!’” she joked. It’s a lighthearted moment, but it also highlights the complexities of Hollywood’s beauty standards.

De-Aging for Happy Gilmore 2

Speaking of aging, Julie revealed some exciting news about her upcoming role in Happy Gilmore 2. Fans will get to see her reprising her role as Virginia Venit, but with a twist—she’ll be de-aged for the movie. “We do a 25-year span,” Julie told Entertainment Tonight at the Power of Women event in Los Angeles on October 25. “I get de-aged, and I’m super excited about it. It’s like stepping back in time!”

While Julie couldn’t spill all the secrets about the movie, she did hint at its star-studded cast. “The cast list is coded,” she explained. “It’ll say ‘busboy,’ and then you get there and go, ‘Wait, you’re not a busboy—you’re a huge star!’ It’s like that every single day. The surprises never stop.”

Of course, Adam Sandler will return to reprise the titular role, and Julie couldn’t gush enough about her co-star. “He’s still as funny as ever,” she said. “He finally grew into those big shorts. Now, they suit him perfectly. He’s like a dad in his big ol’ dad shorts. I love it.”

Big Spoilers and Memorable Moments

Julie has already let slip a few spoilers about Happy Gilmore 2, though she insists it wasn’t on purpose. During an appearance on Today in September, she was asked if her character and Adam’s character were still together in the sequel. “Yes, we are very much together,” she replied, only to be playfully called out by Jenna Bush Hager for sharing a “spoiler alert.”

“Is that bad? No. That… You can put that… I think I’m allowed to say that!” Julie responded, laughing off the moment.

She also reflected on her experience filming the original Happy Gilmore, which marked her debut in film. While she loved the project overall, there was one thing she wasn’t thrilled about: her hair. “I was really uncomfortable with my hair in that movie,” she admitted. “I remember crying in my trailer, thinking no one would see it. But guess what? It’s the only movie my dad has watched over and over again!”

Working with Bob Barker

Julie shared a fond memory of working with the late Bob Barker on his iconic scene in the original film. “It was one of my favorites,” she said. “In this scene, he had to say, ‘The price is wrong, [bitch],’ but he didn’t want to say it because he was such a gentleman. They shot this scene for hours on end on this gorgeous golf course in Vancouver. By the end of the day, he was fully into it. He was like, ‘The price is wrong, [bitch]!’ It was unforgettable.”
